Moeraki Boulders
Moeraki Boulders are located in Otago and the South Island and they are a group of big almost
perfect spherical stones on the strech Koekohe Beach, they are about 60 million
years old and were formed from ancient see floor sediments.
This Maori legend
Tells that those stones were the food baskets of Te Kaihimaki´s canoe,
Araiteuru, one of the ancestral boats that brought Maori people from Hawaiki to
New Zealand the boat was sunken during a voyage to carry green stone to the
island and the kumara on board, which is a sweet potatoe became on strong
boulders the baskets became on soft edges and finally the sunken ship became on
a reef. For Maori people The Moeraki Boulders are holy stones. In 1938 one of
these Boulders was taking to the Otago museum to be showed but 25 years later
it started to break dawn while other boulders in the beach were intact.
Nowadays The Moeraki Boulders for being a natural phenomenon it is preserve for
the government with legal protection.

Amazing...I read that if you put a compass above one of the rocks, the compass spins unevenly :S
